Aren't We All Immigrants?
Following a crime wave involving immigrants from Romania, some fear that an outburst of xenophobia might be sparking in Italy.
Italian Americans cannot forget that Italian immigrants in the U.S. have been usually identified with the “Mafia” and perceived as naturally prone to crime. As late as 1973 President Richard M. Nixon could claim that “you can’t find one [Italian] that’s honest”.
In this famous movie - "Pane e cioccolata", 1973 - the great Nino Manfredi plays an Italian immigrant in Switzerland who is questioned by the police and confronts not only stereotypes and prejudices, but a clash between different cultures and habits.

From what I have read in the Italian press, it does appear that an anti-Romanian (and anti-Roma) backlash is occurring in Italy, in response to several high-profile crimes apparently committed by Romanian immigrants. I am disturbed by both the rhetorical and physical violence perpetrated by right-wingers in government and in the streets in response to these crimes. The indiscriminate targeting of all Romanians -- Italy's largest immigrant group -- because of the actions of a minority is pretty much what you'd expect from the "Casa delle Liberta'" and particularly the chauvinistic Lega Nord. But according to today's Repubblica, Minister of the Interior Amato says there will be no mass expulsions, and that the government is adopting the stance of Rifondazione and the Left on this matter rather than that of the Cdl. The "ministro della solidarietà sociale" Paolo Ferrero is calling Fini, the head of the "post"-Fascist An, a racist. This is all very good. Italy, like any other nation, has the right to demand that new arrivals respect the nation's laws. But xenophobia and racism are wrong and certainly inappropriate responses to the criminal actions of a few.

I was listening to a discussion on RAIUNO International recently about the anti-Romanian ferver in Italy and it was mentioned in passing that one reason so many people choose to immigrate to Italy is its very lenient penal system. So maybe the Romanians, Romas, and various other clandestini are respecting the nation's laws or at least enjoying them. I know nothing about the Italian penal code....what do you think? I would of thought Italian law to be fairly strict. Of course, nothing justifies nationalist ULTRAs in the streets.

We are all immigrants and always will be especially italians of the older immigrants. The latin americans too. They will always be immigrants....What the italians did which was not good is to give up their language. It was illegal to speak italian for awile. I have a friend he's 78 both his parents were born in italy they married each other there and came to ny they didn't allow their children to speak italian as it wouldn't be good for them. He then studied in padau at medical school there, as the universities in america had a quota limitation for italians, although he was born here.
In italy his trouble was similiar he wasn't italian.
Harvard did not alllow italians at the time as their academic studies "proved" that they/we were inferior. This was all told to me by my friend. As if i'd never exsperienced prejudice as an italian american----but i was not aware of how much there was and still is. This will never stop, bread and chocolate.....

Also see www.marilynmonroefoundation.com she too was an american of italian decent, both parents. Even now in 2007-08 her italian heritage is "preposterous" some say. But the truth stands and the americans don't like it, how could an italian be the all american representation of the girl next door. And with demaggio, when she is mentioned, she was the dream american he was able to marry. Immigrants, they, she passed for american, or else she couldn't have been the all american blonde bombshell.

Well, here n Switzerland live a lot of italians, italics and the third language of the country (official) is italian. A famous writer, Martin Suter, wrote a book, "The perfect friend", that talks about Fabio, a swiss italian who lost his memory. Italians and italics are very popular today in Switzerland. They are open minded, fashionable and so on. Fabio, who wants to know somethig about his past - he discovers that he is a traitor, he caused a suicide of his best friend - is one of this emerging italians in Switzerland. Martin Suter repeats the famous Nixon statement: never trust an italian?
Some years ago, a major newspaper from Zurich wrote about "Umanesimo latino", a conference about latin-italic values: "Now also the italians want to teach us how to live?".
Italic values - good life, good look, peace (and love...) - aren't good enough for Switzerland? Or maybe some swiss people prefer the italians like Nino Manfredi who admires but is totally separated from the "blonds" in "Pane e cioccolata"?
I wrote a novel, "Tabù", about Switzerland and italicity. A swiss journalist asked me: "Isn't a little bit cheap to say that italic values are better than ours?". Well, I didn't wrote they were "better". I am sure, indeed, they are "blonder"...

Vediamo che succede :-)
Il problema dell'immigrazione è nato in Italia nei primi anni '90 con l'arrivo della prima ondata di immigrati dal nord Africa.
Con disprezzo venivano chiamati "'vu cumprà" (che significa "vuoi comprare" dal loro tipico modo di chiedere).
Troppo spesso i mass media cavalcano l'onda xenofoba e amano spaventare i cittadini affibiando le colpe di tutti i reati agli immigrati.
Salvo poi scoprire che "lo straniero" non centra nulla ma ormai il danno è fatto, non vengono pubblicate smentite e la gente ha impressa nella mente la figura distorta dello straniero pericoloso/assassino e spacciatore di droga.
Naturalmente con l'arrivo degli immigrati, soprattutto clandestini, abbiamo avuto un aumento dei reati.
Ma questo è un problema che non nasce con l'arrivo degli immigrati ma dall'impossibilità di controllare i flussi clandestini. Infatti chi arriva in italia come clandestino, come in molti altri paesi del mondo, non può esser assunto e lavorare "in regola" ma è costretto a fare la fame o a darsi alla criminalità.
Non so se esista una soluzione ma di certo quella proposta dal governo Belrusconi (legge Bossi-Fini) è assolutamente inutile, spesso inapplicabile, e soprattutto avversata dagli stessi elettori della Lega.
Infatti le aziende italiane, le famiglie italiane hanno bisogno del sostegno degli immigrati per poter andare avanti.
Le badanti che assistono gli anziani, gli operai che lavorano nelle nostre fabbriche sono sempre più spesso stranieri perché molti italiani considerano questi lavori troppo faticosi o umili.
Forse siamo noi italiani d'Italia che non siamo abbastanza maturi e dobbiamo ancora crescere per capire questa evoluzione della nsotra società.
Ma gli italiani non sono sempre stati xenofobi, la storia di Venezia insegna che la Repubblica Serenissima raggiunse il suo massimo splendore quando aprì le proprie frontiere alle genti di tutto il mondo conosciuto ed io spero che prima o poi torni ad essere così. :-)

eppure qualcosa si muove, nonostante l'Italia non abbia ancora una poltica definita di integrazione degli straieri in arrivo. C'è un progetto dell'Università Iulm di Milano per presentare efficacemente tutto ciò che lega l'Italia alla Romania, ed è parecchio. Se son rose fioriranno...

E' una bella notizia.
La Romania è uno dei paesi con cui siamo legati anche dalla somglianza della lingua ma spero, e mi adopero nel mio piccolo, perché tutti noi ci si senta cittadini del mondo indipendentemente dal posto dove viviamo o dove siamo nati.
Anche scrivere in una community come questa è un passo avanti nel conoscersi di più e comprendere le diversità che ci uniscono oltre alle diversità che ci dividono (e che il tempo cancellerà).

Il fenomeno attuale degli immigrati Romeni in Italia è la punta dell'iceberg di una situazione nata a metà degli anni 80. In effetti i primi flussi di immigrati clandestini sono stati quelli delle popolazioni provenienti dall'Albania. Il facile insediamento presso l'Italia, le misure restrittive inesistenti e la propensione di alcuni italiani ai facili guadagni hanno favorito tale infoltimento di comunità straniere divulgando attraverso "lo stare bene in Italia" anche a paesi vicini. Questo è un problema nazionale, molto simile a quello che l'America ha dovuto affrontare nel primo '900. Allora le ragioni storiche erano ben più gravi e la cultura generale non permetteva di arrivare a conclusioni e decisioni "giuste" per poter arginare il fenomeno. Se pensiamo che dietro il nome Mafia c'è la storia di un paese, l'Italia, che prima dell'arrivo dei Savoia, era fiorente, qualcuno di voi si meraviglierà. Eppure la storia va letta e interpretata tra le righe, non memorizzando l'evento o la data che lo fanno riconoscere. Mi presento, visto che è la prima volta che scrivo. Sono Rossana e sono una storica. Mi piacerebbe aprire in questo sito un gruppo di discussione sulla storia "Dall'Italia all'America" per raccontare quello che davvero è successo. Vi aspetto con i consigli. Grazie!

Infatii, Alfredo, io non ho detto questo. So che gli italiani in america sono rispettati, ma visto che l'argomento riguarda la xenofobia in generale, tu sai meglio di me che quando ci vogliono attaccare, denigrare e farci passare per un popolo di delinquenti, tirano fuori il nome Mafia. Ho precisato anche che proprio dietro quella organizzazione c'è la storia di un popolo e mi piacerebbe, se vuoi, raccontare cosa davvero è successo prima che nascesse la mafia.
Sarò in New York City dal 19 al 27 aprile e mi farebbe piacere incontrare molti di voi.
